Red Dog Howls

Red Dog Howls
Thursday, June 12, 2008 8pm
El Portal Theatre, North Hollywood

I've seen a lot of shows since the last time I updated this blog. Walking in the door tonight after seeing this show ... I just had to write about it right now at 10:40pm.

This production only has three characters. A man searching for his history, his roots, his heritage. A wife longing for her husband to be there, present, with her as she builds their family. A grandmother suffering with a horrible memory, compelled to strengthen this young man for his future life.

This play was well written, well directed, well produced, and amazingly acted. The reveal at the end is so unexpected, so horrible, that I don't think anyone will ever forget it. The last time I had this feeling was sitting at the Mark Taper Theatre and watching that lady walk on stage with a dead goat in her hands. Shocking. Moving. Unforgettable. This show should go to Broadway. It's that caliber of a production.

Kathleen Chalfant is amazing, stunning, captivating, hilarious, moving...you just can't take your eyes off of her when she in on stage. The place that she has to go with the character every performance is just awe inspiring.
